Softball improves in polls, Luna earns Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors
After moving to 10-0, Texas advances in both weekly polls and sophomore Blaire Luna garners Big 12 Pitcher of the Week accolades.
AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Softball team advanced in both national polls and sophomore hurler Blaire Luna earned Big 12 Pitcher of the Week lauds after the Horns posted a 5-0 record last week. The Longhorns improved to No.11 in the USAToday/NFCA poll and to No. 12 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll.
Luna paced the Longhorns to the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational crown last weekend, posting a 3-0 record, a 0.00 ERA, 32 strikeouts and two complete-game shutouts in 16.0 innings of work. The Austin, Texas, native is currently riding a streak of 18.1 innings without allowing an earned run. She allowed just 10 baserunners for the week and held opponents to a .100 batting average.The honor is the fifth of Luna’s career.
Texas is joined by six other Big 12 foes in the poll, with Oklahoma weighing in at No. 6/6 [NFCA/USA Softball], Missouri ranking No. 16/15, Oklahoma State grabbing a No. 19/18 ranking, Texas Tech ranking No. 21/19, Nebraska holding the No. 18/22 positions and Texas A&M claiming the No. 24/21 spots
The NFCA poll is topped by Georgia, which received 16-of-30 first-place votes. Rounding out the top five are UCLA, Arizona, Florida and Alabama. In the USA Softball poll, Arizona earned 8-of-20 first-place votes to headline the poll. Alabama ranks second, while UCLA and Georgia share the third spot and Florida weighs in at fifth.
Ten of Texas’ 2011 opponents appear in each poll.
Texas returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 24 when it takes on Fordham at the Cathedral City Classic. First pitch is slated for 7:30 p.m. Central.
