Texas signee fails to qualify academically

AUSTIN — Quincy Russell, the former Sam Houston standout who last February signed a national letter of intent to play defensive tackle at Texas, has failed to qualify academically, his high school coach said Tuesday.
Russell, a 6-foot-3, 289-pound Rivals four-star prospect, is considering offers from junior colleges including Tyler, Cisco and Navarro, Sam Houston coach Gary Green said. Green said UT is helping with the process and expressed hopes of re-signing Russell in two years.
“He was very close,” Green said. “They thought he would be OK. But the (NCAA) clearinghouse said different.”
