The University of Texas base defense is a 4-3, but seemed to show a lot of 3-4, which confused the offense.  The Rice Owls threw the ball 30 times and rushed 30 times, which shows an extremely balanced offense.  The Texas Longhorns defensive backfield did an adequate job with it’s Pass Defense.  The issue in this game was the Defensive Line, which could not handle the run, especially the Defensive Tackles (not much depth either).  The Rice Owls ran for 130 yards, which averaged 4.3 yards per carry.  Giving up 100+ yards against a very mediocre running game, only shows there is a lot of work to be done … just wait until a top ranked running attack.  There was not a lot of pressure on Rice’s QB and RB’s, which usually means lack of turnovers, which was the case (Special Teams fumble).

The defensive performance ended up with many pros and cons, but with a result of only 9 points … you must be happy, given the new coaching staff and new schemes.  They should get better week by week.
