By Randy Maltz – Founder/Editor Silver and Blue Report & Hook’em Report
University of Texas Men’s Golf head coach John Fields was just named Golfweek’s Coach of the Year. To add to this great news, senior Dylan Frittelli and freshman Jordan Spieth were named Golfweek first-team All-Americans. Junior Julio Vegas was named to the second team.
The Texas Longhorns won seven tournament titles last season, which was the the program’s third NCAA Championship. This was the University of Texas first Men’s Golf National Championship since 1972. The Longhorns held the No. 1 national ranking for all but two weeks during the 2011-12 season. Spieth (No. 2) and Fritteli (No.3) boasted two of the top three players in the country. Texas won its third NCAA men’s golf championship, defeating Alabama on a 20-foot birdie putt by senior Dylan Frittelli at Rivera Country Club. Texas also won NCAA Championships in 1971 and 1972, when future PGA Tour golfers and major championship winners Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite were on the team.
